Target Audience

The intended audience for the activity is psychiatrists, primary care physicians, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with binge eating disorder (BED).

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

• Assess the etiology, risk factors, and comorbidities associated with binge eating disorder and their relation to weight gain and obesity.
• Apply evidence-based diagnostic criteria to differentially diagnose binge eating disorder.
• Incorporate the use of psychotherapy, cognitive therapy, and pharmacotherapy as needed, for the safe and effective treatment of binge eating disorder.

Overview

Binge eating disorder (BED) is characterized by insatiable food cravings that can occur at any time of the day or night. Binging is often rooted in poor body image, use of food to deal with stress, low self-esteem, and tied to dysfunctional thoughts. With the association of BED and obesity, this disorder has become a major public health issue that presents both medical and psychiatric issues, impairing patients’ quality of life. Although the prevalence of this disorder is increasing, awareness is lacking. A closer look at its prevalence, as well as screening and treatment options, is needed. Health care providers who manage these patients need additional education to improve their awareness and treatment of this condition.
